I'd love to know where in Ireland, if a could ever get to that point! My Dewan line hits a brickwall since greatgrandad Edward Dewan was a supposed "orphan". He was raised by John & Rose Spain (both from Ireland)in South Amboy,Middlesex County, NJ. Census records indicate he was born ~ 1875. Lists his parents ( biological or foster?) both from Ireland. Early census lists him as John, and later as Edward...don't know if he actually had the name John Edward and started going by his middle name to avoid confusion with his foster dad, although they did have different surnames. On one return he is designated as "nephew" although I don't know if it was actually a blood relationship or not. Tracing Spain for possibilities has not been easy either, seems I'm dealing with two of the more uncommon Irish surnames. Family history suggests that he had family down in Trenton, NJ and I have run across many Dewans in that area.
