Hey thanks, it helps to hear that. I went back and looked more at my notes and to further complicate it, Wm Westley Dye Sr (1817-1873) had a younger brother Martin Evander Dye (1832-1891) and he was a CSA soldier also so uncle/nephew same name, both CSA soldiers, both from Moore Co.
I'm looking at a copied page from the UDC entitled NC Troops 1861-1865 Vol. II compiled by Louis H Manarin. On this page there are three Dye's listed from Moore Co., David Turner Dye my GGF, John M Dye, and Martin E Dye. The 2nd Martin E Dye isn't mentioned and that may be where the problem is, that somehow it was presumed there was only Martin Evander Dye who lived to 1891 I think so nobody realized the other one was killed.
On the Civil War Soldiers page I find this:
Dye, M. Evander
Confederate
Infantry
1st Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (6 months, 1861)

Dye, Martin E.
Confederate
Cavalry
5th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry

Dye, John M.
Confederate
Cavalry
5th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry

Dye, Turner
Confederate
Cavalry
5th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry

so it lists two different men with the same name.

Then on ancestry I find these listings:
Martin Evander Dye
b. Cumberland Co.

enlisted age 29
enlistment: 5 Dec 1862
Enlisted in Company A, North Carolina 5th Cavalry Regiment on 12 May 1862. Promoted to Full Qtr Master Serg on 31 Jan 1863.

Martin Evander Dye

enlistment: 17 Apr 1861
Cumberland County
Enlisted in Company F, North Carolina 1st Infantry Regiment on 17 Apr 1861.
Mustered out on 12 Nov 1861.

Martin Dye

Enlisted in Company F, 1st Infantry Regiment North Carolina.
Enlisted as a Private on 12 May 1862 at the age of 29.
Enlisted in Company A, 5th Cavalry Regiment North Carolina on 12 May 1862.
Promoted to Full Quartermaster Sergeant on 31 Jan 1863.

Martin Dye
Cumberland Co
Enlisted in Company A, 5th Cavalry Regiment North Carolina.
Enlisted as a Private on 17 April 1861 at the age of 28.
Enlisted in Company F, 1st Volunteers Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 17 Apr 1861.
Mustered Out Company F, 1st Volunteers Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 12 Nov 1861.

Martin E Dye
5 North Carolina Cavalry
5th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry
Comp A
Quartermaster Sergeant

M Evander Dye
1 North Carolina Infantry (6 Months, 1861)
1st Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (6 months, 1861)
Co F

I sure can't tell which belong to which man and how to confirm which was David's brother that was killed. Thanks for trying to help me sort this all out.
Dianne
