William Edwin Dyess and Aquilla James "Jimmie" Dyess are 4th cousins. Their common ancestors are John (Dias) Dyess and Violator Beasley.

William was recommended for the CMH but I cant find where any action was ever taken. Two theories; 1):War ended and intrest was lost. 2:His wife's family had a publishing business in Chicago (I think) and they published his book against the gov. wishes. No proof of either. You might try Dyess AFB for more info.

Interesting note on Aquilla, He was named for his grandfather Aquilla James. The family lived in Sumter Co. GA. The grandfather was a member of the 4th GA Reserves in the CSA. The 4th Reserves served in part as guards at the CSA Andersonville POW camp. What a twist of fate, Grandfather's war service "could be" considered war crimes while grandson and namesake was considered as a hero and honored for his war service with the CMH.
