James Woodrow “J. W.” Dykes, 72, of Conway, Arkansas, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock. J. W. was born January 12, 1936 in Kingsland, Arkansas, a son of the late William Louis and Ludie Ethel (West) Dykes. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Charles Marion, Odis Frank and Robert Sanford Dykes; sisters, Grace Ruth Stell and Annie Katherine Franklin.
Mr. Dykes was a retired customer service technician for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) and had also worked as a cable splicer and installation technician. He was also a member of the Pioneers Club of Communication Workers of America; a National Guard Veteran, becoming mobilized, and served during the Central High crisis; a graduate of Kingsland High School; and was Baptist.
His family remembers him as a very loving, generous man who enjoyed fishing, gardening, and hunting; but above all, valued the well-being and safety of his family as the greatest gift of life.
J. W. is survived by his wife of fifty years, Patricia LaFay (Young) Dykes; children, Brenda Dykes-Kelly and husband Keith; Robert Stanley Dykes and wife Raquel L.; James Randall Dykes and wife Christi A. all of Conway; his sister, Lorene Brandon of Rison, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Brandon Robert, John Wade, Noah Patrick, Baylen Andrew and Blade Anthony Dykes; and a number of nephews and nieces.
The family visitation will be from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 1, 2008 at the funeral home. Funeral will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday in the chapel of Roller-McNutt with Reverend Bryan Stell officiating. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway. 501-327-7727.
