Dymond / Dimond , 1906 Oxfordshire

I believe that my grandfather's name was Dymond / Dimond but my grandmpother was unmarried and my mother's birth certificate says 'Father unknown'. My grandmother was in service in Oxfordshire and became pregnant in 1906 and was recommended to a 'Home for Friendless Girls' in Exeter. My grandfather was said to have been a soldier or a marine. My grandmother was not born in Oxfordshire so wonder why she went to Exeter to have her baby. Does anyone have any clues that I could follow.
