I know of two James Dysarts from that time:One was James Dysart b. 1744 in
Donegal County, Ireland.Arrived in Philadelphia from Ireland in 1761.He
was a Long Hunter, settled in Abingdon, VA.Married Agnes Nancy Beattie,
fought in the Battle of King's Mountain as a Captain of Dragoons. He was
wounded in the left hand for which he received a pension. Was promoted to
Colonel of the Virginia Militia over the years.Built Brook Hall in 1775
(named after his home in Ireland) and later sold it to a relative, William
Byars in 1806 and moved with many kin to Rockcasle County, Kentucky.died
there 26 May 1818.He was the first Sheriff of Washington County (receiving
his commission from Governor Patrick Henry. He served one term in the
Virginia State Legislature and was presented a sword by the Legislature for
his service in the Revolution.
The other was James Dysart b. About 1727 in Londonderry who was his uncle.
This James settled in the Carolinas with another portion of the Dysart clan
and died during the Revolution at Cowan's Ford, North Carolina, on 1 Feb
1781.This James married Margaret Young about 1747 in Chester Pennsylvania.
They had six and five children, respectively. The only other James I show
even close to this time is a first cousin b. 1760 and died 1839.This one
never left Ireland.
Because of his military and civil service, his war wound and pension, my
gggg grandfather, the first James, I have the most documented information.
I even know when his sword was stolen by Union troops in Missouri during the
Civil War.I can give you lots of references with many interesting (and
some boring) details of life in Abingdon just prior/during/and after the
Revolution.Indian raids, church meetings, capturing Tories, etc.
