Billie, The Eacrets are probably among the most confusing people I have tried to sort out. Our interest is in a John D Eacret who married (twice, I think) to Elizabeth Knickerbocker. We would like to learn more about John Eacret, especially anything which might lead to more clues about our Knickerbocker family. In searching, we have happened upon various odds and ends, many of which don’t make sense. I have read your postings and I don’t know if this will help, or just add to the confusion, but….. Some online information shows there was a Peter Covalt/Covault who was born c 1823 Hamilton County OH (s/o Ephraim Covault b ca 1782 Bedford Co PA d Sep 1859 Logan Twp, Fountain Co IN who md ca 1821 Hamilton Co OH to Eleanor Shanks). Some info shows this Peter married first to Rhoda Kellogg (1825-1856) on 9 Nov 1843 in Fountain County IN. They had children: Eliza J b 1845 Fountain Co IN, Rhoda A b 1848 Fountain Co IN, Mary E b 1849 Fountain Co IN, and Nancy Ellen b 1851 Tippecanoe Co IN. This might be the same Peter who shows up in the Illinois statewide marriage index and Vermilion Co IL marriage records -- his name is listed as Peter Covolt, and he married to Hester Ann Songer on 22 August 1858 in Vermilion Co IL. The 1860 census for Catlin Township, Vermilion County IL, shows Peter Covalt age 36, male, farmer, born Ohio and Hester Covalt age 19, female b Illinois, can‘t r/w. No children are enumerated with them. I don’t know what happened to Peter Covalt, but there is a marriage listing in the Illinois index and Vermilion Co marriage records which might be a subsequent marriage for Hester. The listings show that John D Eacret married Hester A Covalt on 10 November 1866 in Vermilion County, Illinois. In the 1870 census there is a family which might be John & Hester. They are also in Catlin Township, Vermilion County, Illinois, listed as follows: Ekard, John 33 male farm laborer IN cit Hester 33 f keeping house IL can’t write Samuel 11 m IL sch Henry 6 m IL Charlotte 3 f IL No name 3/12 m IL (If this is the same Hester, and the ages of the children are fairly accurate, then I would think that Samuel and Henry are Covalts, and Charlotte and the baby are Eacrets) The John Eacret I am searching shows up in 1880 in Mahomet, Champaign Co IL, living with his sister Rachel Songer (though I think he is the right person, the census shows he is single, which I doubt, as when he later married Elizabeth Knickerbocker the record shows it was not his first marriage), and there is an interesting online listing for a Hester Eacret in Monroe, Hamilton County, Nebraska. Clearly Hester’s age is off, the children‘s names vary somewhat, and I would question whether she is widowed or divorced. I have not verified the info on microfilm to see how well it matches, but it could be the same Hester: 1880 Monroe, Hamilton County, Nebraska shows: Hester A Eacret age 30 widowed female white keeping house IL IL IA -- all of her children are listed as Covalts, but I am wondering if some should be Eacrets. The children are listed as: Covalt, Samuel son single male white 19 farm laborer IL IN IL Hugh son single male white 15 farm laborer IL IL IA Clarra daughter single male white 12 IN IL IA Ellen daughter single female white 9 IL IL IA Mary daughter single female white 5 IL IL IA William son single male white 3 IN IL IA I realize that this is pretty far-fetched, but do you think there is any possibility that the 3 year old William Covalt in the 1880 reading could possibly be your Willard Harm Eacret? If you, or anyone else, might be able to shed light on this confusing mess, please post. We have quite a bit of other info which might connect here, and I assure you it is all just as confusing. We are willing to share any info we have regarding the Eacret and Knickerbocker families. Donna & Tim Notify Administrator about this message?
