Maryville Times (Blount Co. TN) September 22, 1900:

"Was Not Murdered---The mystery concerning the supposed murder of Jerome B. Eagle near Rockford last week, has cleared up, as his death was caused by natural causes. His buggy and horse which were found by Sheriff Pickens and deputy led them to think that at first that the man had been murdered, but the fact was soon learned that two men by the name of O’Hara and Eagle had stopped for the night with Mr. McElwee, but that he had made them leave on account of the noise made by Eagle who was suffering from delirium tremens. The men then drove off and got separated in the darkness. After crossing the river and going a short distance, Eagle got out of his buggy and started for the river again and fell down an embankment which caused his death. The body was discovered about 200 yards from his horse and buggy. $67 dollars was found on his person and one dollar in silver was lying a few feet away, and this is positive proof that he could not have been killed for robbery. No marks of violence were found on his body.
O’Hara, the man who was with him seems greatly distressed over his friend’s death and had Eagle’s body shipped to Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania] his hold home. The circumstances of this man’s death are very sad. One more life has been sacrificed to King Alcohol."
