Did Luther Eagle work for the U.S. Post Office? I've heard him mentioned by family members although I never knew him. I've been reviewing my records and searching Arkansas census records on the internet. In the 1850 Prairie County census, Richwoods Township, in the household of Alexander Eagle, age 34, and his wife Eliza, age 35, there's a 2 year old son named Joseph. In the 1860 Prairie County census, Prairie Township, in the household of David Eagle, a widower, is Eliza Eagle, age 40, born in TN, and a male child, Joseph Eagle, age 11, also born in TN. In the 1870 Pulaski County census, Prairie Township, Joseph Eagle, age 23 is a farm laborer living in the household of John D. Eagle. John D. is the son of David and Betsy Long Eagle. In the 1880 Lonoke County census, Lonoke Township, Eliza Eagle, age 65, is living in the household of Alexander Eagle, age 60. The above records don't actually answer your questions. Is the Joseph Eagle in the 1860. 1870 and 1880 census your great grandfather? Even though there are descripancies in his age and in Eliza's I think this is your ancestor. A little background may be in order. The Eagle families that moved to present day Lonoke County are descended from Philip Eagle through his sons Joseph and David. There was also a third son, Samuel, whose son Sandy married Eliza Furlow in Maury County, TN. Sandy is a common nickname for Alexander. The census records leave the strong impression that Alexander "Sandy" and his wife Eliza moved to Arkansas. Please let me know what your thinking is on the above.
