Don,
There are still large gaps in what I know about the early history of the name Eagles in New Jersey. One family was in Newark, apparently arriving there about the time of the Revolution. They were probably English but I have to admit that I donīt know anything specific about their origins at present. Check out the following site:

Another family was of German origin, the name originally being spelled Egel. If there is a link with this branch, then the family history is known for a few hundred years. There might also be other possibilities beside those two of which I am not aware. The trick would be to try to find a link between your ancestor and one of these families. So far I havenīt been able to do that with my own.
