In your list of the children of David & Mary, the Amanda born in 1838 is the granddaughter, not daughter of David & Mary.
In doing the math, Mary would have been about 52 in 1838. On the 1850 Jasper Co, Ms census, it clearly shows that DAvid & Mary and living with son Elias, and GRANDdaughter Amanda Jane Sheppard born 1838. (Parents were Rebecca Eakin & Absalom Sheppard)
I know it lists in several places that David & Mary had a daughter Amanda born 1838, but that seems too much of a coincidence for a daughter and granddaughter born in the same year with the same name. And if Mary was born abt 1786 then she would have been 52 when Amanda was born. (Possible in this day and age, but not back then.)
