This is some of the info thru colaberation with Eakins
Here are my notes on what I have found on the censuses on Ethel-- she married at 14, and is probably the mother of possibly 10 children:
Info from 1900 census of Travis Co., TX, #69--- Ethel is born Oct 1873, listed as 26, md 3 yrs, mother of 2 ch/ 2 living-- she was b. in TX, parents b. in TX. (evidently she fibbed a bit on her age in 1900).
1910 census of Lampases #170-- Ethel is the mother of 6 ch/ 5 living, she is listed as 26, Marion is listed as 37, md 13 yr, she is b. in TX, father in MS, mother in TX.
1920 TX, Lampases Co, #128:
M. S. Hughes 47 TX TX TX
Ethel 34 TX TX TX
Essie Wise 21 daughter (looks like a D) TX Truman Hughes, son 14 TX
Gertrude Hughes, dau 12 TX
Renabella?, dau 10 TX
Inez, dau 9 TX
Freda, son 5 TX
Lorene Wise, gr-dau 2 TX TX TX
1930 census of McColloch Co., TX #201 have Ethel age 45, first md at 14, Marion age 56 first md at 23, 2 children at home-- Robert 7 and Norma 5 all b. in TX. Ethel's parents were both b. in TX. Inez and Freda or Fred (in the 1920 census) are not at home in 1930.
So from the censuses, it seems there are a total of 9-10 children (by 1930).

iii. NINA L. HUGHES, b. 1902, TX.

vi. RENABELLA? HUGHES, b. 1910, TX.
vii. FRED/FREDA HUGHES, b. 1915, TX.
viii. ROBERT L. HUGHES, b. 1923, TX.
ix. NORMA P. HUGHES, b. 1925, TX.
