Thanks for the reply Jerry, I've since found
a John Eagle at the right place and time born in Germany ca. 1784 and farming in New Castle Co. DE during the 1800s.
Since many of our ancestors of that era were illiterate, he was likely an "Igel" (a common name) who could speak his name but not spell it and a census taker would not have asked how but just written "Eagle"
I will look for connections to others in the area.
