Thank you for answering my post! After looking around for several months my conclusion was the same as yours. Searches for Eakle, Ekell, and all the other variations consistently resulted in the crescent and three stars. The problem is finding lineage back to the original grantee. I got as far as the 1741 passenger list for the St. Mark which included Johann Ekell.

There seems to be a dead end at about 1741. Has anyone gotten any further back? I wouldn't mind going to Germany, but wouldn't know where to start.

I had wanted to commission signet jewelry for family members but not sure what is appropriate now. As the USA doesn't have heraldry laws I may just assume or usurp the cresent and three stars for our branch. Who would challenge it?
