"The Venturers - The Hampton, Harrison and Earle Families of Virginia, South Carolina and Texas" by Virginia G. Meynard - Chart 19, p.923:

[Herlei (1086) .... Richard Earle I of Wiltshire]

Richard Earle II (d. 1648) of Sussex
/
John - Joan (Earle) Smith Morse - Samuel
/
John Earle of Virginia - William Earle

"Robert's grandson, Richard Earle, died in Bexhill Parish, Sussex where apparently he moved ... In his will, dated 1643 and proved 1648, Richard named a son, John Earle, deceased, and two daughters, Joane Earle Smith, apparently a widow, and Elizabeth. He also named his son, Samuel, by his second wife, Elizabeth, as co-heir of his property with his grandson, William. Samuel was a minor at the time the will was written. Another grandson, John Earle, place of residence not given, and his son, William received one shilling each.

Young Samuel Earle of Bexhill died in 1648 not long after his father. In 1649 John Earle the immigrant left for Virginia. On 27 Nov. 1652, John Earle was named in a Chancery Bill (Office of Public Records, Somerset House, London) with his aunt, Mrs. Joane Earle Smith Morse of Nye, Winscombe, Somersetshire, as guardian of six minor children: Edward, Elizabeth, Thomas, Joseph, James and Mary Earle. Mrs. Morse was named c0-guardian because John Earle was in Virginia. This record was investigated by Burke, the eminent English genealogist, who accepted Nye as the home of John Earle of Virginia and so listed it in "Prominent Families of the United States of America", stating that the Earles of South Carolina are entitled to use the arms of the Earle family of the west of England (Somerset and Dorset)."
