Here's a summation of what else I have on the family:
1) Samuel Earles was drafted 12 May 1864, at the same time as his brother Jeremiah, and served as a Private with Company F of the 126th Ohio Voluntary Infantry until 25 Jun 1865. I don't know if he was still living in Ohio or came back so that he could serve with his brother.
2) Elisha S. Earles married 8 Feb 1877 in Pope Co., IL. He and his wife, Mary Emma Woodmansee, lived in Carrsville, KY, where her family was located. According to my grandfather, the family went back and forth between KY and IL a lot, as they owned a store and ferry. I thought the ferry was owned by the Earles family, but have discovered through my research that it was probably owned by the Woodmansee family at that time and later inherited by the Earles. Mary Emma's father is listed on various sources as coming to Carrsville in 1856 and owning both a store and ferry. My grandfather always referred to it as the Earles family store, but Elisha doesn't show up as a merchant until the 1920 census. He is listed in 1900 as a cabinet maker and in 1910 as owning a farm. (My grandfather also told a tale about the store being a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. I have no evidence for that other than his stories.)
3) Samuel's son Jeremiah married 1873 in Massac County, IL, just across the Ohio river from Carrsville. That suggests the Samuel Earles family did live in the vicinity, either in IL or possibly in Carrsville. So Elisha could be connected to them. I just can't find the proof!
