Hi Myra,
You are opening an old can of worms.
The Descent in Dow Ball Eaton and Allied Families is very similar though not identical to the one in History Genealogical and Biographical of the Eaton Families, by N.Z.R. Molyneux pub in 1911.In fact, I believe Dow uses Molyneux as the source or at least they share the same source. They both show the first Eaton as Robert de Eyton a son William Fitz Alan and Isabel de Say.This descent is an error which has gone unchallenged since it was published in 1911 (until this year).
This was discussed in great detail earlier this year. You can search the forum for Eyton to see the full discussion.Though I am very sure of my assertions at this point, I am not sure I have convinced everyone to give up the direct connection to William Fitz Alan.
To summarize, the descent is based on the work of the great historian of Shropshire, Rev. Robert Eyton in his Antiquities of Shropshire. The reason for the error apparently was the misidentification of the holder of the Eyton Manor at the time of the Doomsday Survey in 1086 (a man by the name of Warin, a foeffee of William Pantulf Baron of Wem) with Warin the Bald, 1st Norman Sheriff of Shropshire.
I have consulted every source listed by Molyneux + several more.As far as I can tell the “correct” descent at this point is:
