Cheshire Eatons - Etons of Eaton manor
The Early Eatons of Cheshire
The following is from Ormerod's History of the County Palatine and City of Chester by George Ormerod, revised and expanded by Thomas Helsby, pub. 1882, vol. 2 pg 831-844 and vol. 3 pg 795.
As it turns out it is unlikely that any of us are descendants of the early Eaton's of Cheshire. However the article serves to answer a number of questions people have had including the origin of the Eaton name in Cheshire, the descent of the Eaton manor, the ID of Nicholas de Eaton/Eyton/Eton husband of Joan de Stockport and father of Cicely de Eton.
Arms:Eton de Eton of Cheshire,Quarterly argent and sable, a cross patonce, countercharged.
As we will see these are actually the arms of the Pulford family who first inherited Eaton manor and then later adopted the name Eton.
(Note:the early Eaton families who took their names from Eaton manor generally spelled the name de Eton – I have adopted this spelling to keep this Eton family separate from the other Eaton families we are researching.)
Eaton manor (also called Eton and Etone) can be traced to before the Norman conquest in 1066.After the conquest the Saxon proprietors were evicted and it became the property of Ilbert, one of the minor Norman grantees of Cheshire. He held the manor in the Doomsday Survey where it is called Etone. This early origin certainly indicates that the name and manor of Eaton is distinct from that in Shropshire.
The next known holder of Eaton manor (late 12th century) is William de Eton, called son of William.Based on the descent of the other Ilbert manors this de Eton is likely a cadet branch of the Pichots.William de Eton had 4 children, William, Thomas, Margery and Sybil. Both Thomas and William died without issue and the original Eton line in Cheshire fails almost immediately.
Eaton manor then passes through Margery to her son Hugh de Eton. This Hugh then gives Eaton to his aunt and uncle, Sybil de Eton who married Richard de Pulford. Thus Eaton manor in the mid 13th century passed into the Pulford family.
From here the line goes:
Richard de Pulford/Sybil de Eton
father of
Hamon de Pulford, lord of Eton
father of
Richard (alias de Eton) de Pulford, lord of Eton
father of
Richard (alias de Eton) de Pulford, lord of Eton
father of
Robert de Eton, lord of Eton
(notice the change in surname)
father of
Robert de Eton, lord of Eton
father of
John de Eton, Lord of Eton
John de Eton died without male issue and the manor passed to his daughter Ellen de Eton who married John de Manleigh.Their daughter and sole heir Joan de Manleigh married Ralph Le Grosvenor, thus establishing the well known Grosvenor's of Eaton.I note
That Joan is usually and commonly called the daughter of John de Eton. This is an apparent error as Ormerod shows she is much more likely to be John de Eton's granddaughter as described above.
