Barbara:
Knowing that I am no expert on database requirements, or genealogy, for that matter, my *personal* thought is this:
In the beginning, we should *not* attempt to put up a master gedcom but, rather, create a database that will enable any person with one to put theirs on. Creating a master gedcom, with documentation will be a mighty project, especially if we are -- unlike the LDS folks -- require a reference, if not absolute proof, before an entry can be added.
From a practical standpoint, meaning technical, I don't know what burdens this puts on you, Joe, the system, etc. I do know, as widely believed as my own pedigree may be, I am not ready to ad my information to a master tree.
So, again, my thought would be to enable people to say, as Joe has done in some instances, and we all have done as well, "this is what I believe the facts to be, or think they may be, or read that they might be.
This will help everyone "fill in" a bit and, more important, show us what we don't and do know for sure and why.
Bottom line: Why not have a searchable database for, let's say, a year at least, and then work on the gedcom.
This is an idea and an idea only. Others may have contrary and more valid thoughts. But, in this matter of all, I would choose to err on the side of caution and continuing research until we are closer to closing up some of the big gaps.
But, we must remember that some people are still looking in 1936 and I think it would be a great deal of help to them if we were able to contribute what we, as individuals, have -- or think we have -- as opposed to representing a mass gedcom in a "biblical way."
Just my thoughts.
Rick
