I meant to comment on this right after you posted it but, life and the season being what they are, things got away from me.
I appreciate your observations about the fret and its commonality among Eatons. I especially appreciate you very quiet implications that, because of its use, albeit in a different hue, by Theo's son, there is at least a suggestion of consinguity among the various Shropshire and Cheshire Eatons of the Theo line.
This should be seen as most interesting by all.
If this the son who went to Ireland from America?
Alan Garner has repeatedly said to me that, while the cross was widely used in Cheshire, this should NOT be taken to mean that these Eatons are NOT (note the double negative) related to the de Eytons of Shropshire. In fact, he seems to be quite convinced that they are and that the cross was adopted by a branch of the family to differentiate it from the fret folks.
