2 Williams, Benj W et al Sullivan Cty, NY
Here's the story...
I have happily discovered my gggrandfather and family on the 1870 and 1880
Censues. His name was William Eaton b.1842 or 1848 in NY, both parents born in NY.
Wife Sarah J born 1845 or 1844 in NY, parents born in Ireland.
Children were John B. 1871, Frank W.1872 and Almedia 1879. They later had
another daughter Ruby. Frank was my ggrandfather, and married Agnes Rooney
in appox 1895 after her emigration from Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. She
was working as an upstairs maid in a hotel. They moved to Jersey City in 1900, but as fas as I know rest of family stayed.
William was a stonecutter and lived in Lumberland...don't know what village.
I know that Decker and Gilgore opened a bluestone quarry in 1870, I don't
know if there were other quarries in the area, or if he worked there.
Thanks to Edey Werman's publication, I also know that there are several Eaton's
buried in Glen Cove Cemetery. Another William Eaton b.1824 d.1874, his wife
Lydia Evans b.1817 d 1902. Two of their children George b.1858 d.age 11,
Matilda b 1851 d. age 17.
Also buried there is Martha b 1794 d.1870 wife of Benj.W Eaton (not there)
and "In Memory Of" Hermonis Eaton whose relationship is not clear, or
whether (s)he's actually buried there.
My BIG question is whether the William in the cemetery is my gggrandfathers
father. Obviously, the dates, names, physical proximity all make sense...So,
how do I find out? Has anyone heard of these Eaton's?
Anyone know anything about them? And where on earth would Benjamin be buried
if not with his wife? I assume I will have to look in both Monticello and
Kingston in the Surrogate's Court for records. Also birth/death/marriage records should
also be there. Can anyone suggest other places I should visit, other people
I should speak with?
Also, if my gggrandfater William was not originally from this area can anyone suggest another area in NY he may have come from?
My brother and I hope to make a trip up there in a month or two, so any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Valerie
