Dear Jim,
As you may know, the Molyneaux book on the Eatons is full of errors. For example, the Rev. Joseph Eaton (1679-1749) is the son of John Eaton, the immigrant ancestor who came to Pennsylvania in 1683--Molyneaux created an "extra" John between father and son.In addition, she split the Rev. Joseph Eaton into two people, numbered 5 4 and 8 1, I think, to explain that Rev. Joseph married twice. This is only the beginning of her problems.
We know that Rev. Joseph is the son of John because of the genealogy written on the tombstone of Joseph Eaton who died in Delaware, Ohio, in 1825, in which this Joseph is described as "the son of David Eaton, which was the son of John Eaton, which was the son of Joseph Eaton, which was the son of John Eaton, who emigrated from Wales AD 1686."
The date of emigration is incorrect. We know that John Eaton, his brother George, and John Watts were living on Pennepek Creek before 1686 because of the will of Richard Buttere, dated 16 September 1685,in which he gives each of them 50 acres of land.
Church records describe the ministry of the brothers Rev. Joseph and Rev. George, but when they were young men, they left the Church at Pennypek. With their parents John and Joan, and their wives Gwenllian and Mary, all six joined the Welsh Tract Bapist Meeting in New Castle, Delaware, in 1713.John and Joan died in 1717 while members of this church, but Joseph and Gwen, George and Mary (and others) moved their membership to the Gwynedd meeting house in 1721.
We know that Rev. Joseph and Gwen were parents of a Joseph Eaton born 7 month 2, 1703, in Lower Dublin Township from church records. In his will, proved 7 April 1759, by his second wife Uriah, Rev. Joseph gave his son Joseph five pounds like money to be paid to him "at the expiration of two years after my decease."
Molyneaux identifies two Josephs as the son of Rev. Joseph. The first is Joseph "born 2 July 1703" and is identified as the son of Uriah Gill when we know that this Joseph was the son of Gwen.Molyneaux says this Joseph died unmarried. The second Joseph is identified as the son of Gwen with a birth date of 1728--Molyeaux says he married a Katherine.
Molyneaux identifies the Joseph born 1728 as the father of a Joseph b. 1756 who married a Jeanet Ramsey.Again, Molyneaux has created two people. However, we do know that Rev. Joseph's son Joseph was by his wife Gwen and born in 1703.Molyneaux also identifies Rev. Joseph's son Isaac as the son of Gwen, when Rev. Joseph states in his will that Isaac is the son of his wife Uriah.
In short, Rev. Joseph had a son Joseph, but I don't think he is the one born in 1728.It is possible that the first Joseph died and a second son was named Joseph, but if he were, he would be Uriah's son, and I think he would have been directed to pay support to his mother as Isaac was.
If you solve this problem, I would be interested in the answer.Good luck, I hope this helps.
