James Eaton MYSTERY: NY, NH?, IL, & ?

Maybe someone can help me? I am looking for James Eaton, who married Sarah Lee. James was born about 1797-1800 in either NY or NH, depending on which census record you read. He died before 1870.
He is living in Broome County, NY in 1850 Census. There is a David Eaton there in Broome, too. But I have NO PROOF that David is James' father.
To make matters worse, James & et familia moved to Kane County, Ill. about 1850. Their daughter, Lucy was married there in 1857. James and ANOTHER James Eaton, born about the same time, born NY is there in the same small town. Multiple similar family names abound. (Who has a son named Festus Eaton? Apparently both these James Eatons, born about the same time!) The other James Eaton is married to a Julia. Who are these people? Which one is my ancestor? Why do they both disappear before 1870? There is only one grave in Ill. in 1864 for a James Eaton. No other Eatons in that cemetery.
I believe his wife, my Sarah Lee Eaton, born 1804, moved back to Broome County and died there in 1888. There is a grave for her. HELP! These Eaton's are driving me crazy?! Is one of these James' the one who was born in 1797 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire? Or neither. My James Eaton appears to not be, according to the Eaton family book.
So ANY help in directing me, sorry for the rant, in the direction of James Eaton, born 1797-1800 in either New York or New Hampshire, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! :)
