Well let's see if we can sort this out.Ya'll know more than I do but I was contacted by another Eck researched descended from George Eck married to Caroline from Shelby County, Indiana.I have another branch of the Shelby County Eck's in my database.
I did a quick search for her and found the following:
1850 Federal Census, District 97, Rush County, Indiana
Enumerated 4 October 1850 by J. H. Hedrick
1066/1066 FLAKE, Henry 34 M Merchant Germany
FLAKE, Mary 41 F Germany
ECK, Michael 16 M Farmer Ohio
ECK, Katharine 13 F Ohio
ECK, Barbay 11 F Ohio
ECK, George 9 M Indiana
ECK, Jacob 8 M Indiana
ECK, Mary 7 F Indiana
ECK, Jno 4 M Indiana
In the Shelby County, Indiana Marriage Records, Mary Ann ECK married Henry FLECK 16 April 1850.
Since I don't "know" this family I assumed that Mary Ann Unknown [to me-ya'll are saying HALE] ECK was widowed and married Henry FLAKE/FLECK in April. This census was enumerated in October.
Then,
1860 Federal Census, Orange Township, Rush County, Indiana
Moscow Post Office
page 16
Enumerated [not given] July 1860 by W. A. Callen
222/222 ECK, May 50 F Merchant Germany
ECK, George 19 M Indiana
ECK, Jacob 18 M Indiana
ECK, Mary 16 F Indiana
ECK, John 15 M Indiana
This looked like the same family to me, with mother Mary once again using the ECK surname and not FLAKE or FLECK. I wondered if the marriage failed ? But again, I do not know.
Sorry if I have inadvertantly muddied the waters.Kathy
