I post this letter as it may be of interest to someone. RM1/C Don L. Eckhardt wrote this
letter to my relatives from sea April 14, 1945

Dear Mr. and Mrs Loomis:
I recieved your very welcome letter on the morning that we shoved off and I am endeavoring to get caught up on some of my letter writing while we are out to sea. I have received several letters recently from my relatives bawling me out for not writing, so I guess its about time I am trying to catch up.

Well, we are seeing a change of scenery but all of these islands look alike so I guess it doesnt make much difference which one a person is on. They are all full of disease and a person is mighty glad to leave them as they are entirely different from the movie version. The natives at this last island were very ragged looking and a lot of them had deformed arms and legs; none of them looked like they would live to be very old so I guess they die young. We never saw a native woman all of the time we were there, but the men and boys were always rowing out by the ships.

We received the word of the presidents death early yesterday morning and I guess it came as a great surprise to the whole world. It may have a great affect on the world conferences, but I dont imagine it will affect the war effort any. He will go down in history as a great man because he was really a smart politician. I sure hope Truman knows what it is all about as the rest of this year will probably be pretty important as far as world history is concerned.

Margaret took some more pictures of the baby but it was too cold to take him outside and she had to take them inside and they didn't come out good. It ought to be getting warm enough for them to take them outside pretty soon.

Well, Its about time for me to get busy, so I guess I will close for this time. I have never heard any of Fuller's broadcasts out here, but I hope it isnt too long until I can attend one in person.

As always,
DON
USS ATR-33
