Some information you may find interesting.

Descendants of George Adam Eckhart

Generation No. 1

1. GEORGE ADAM1 ECKHART1 was born 1729 in Bavaria2, and died July 04, 1806 in Eckhart Mines, Allegany Co., Maryland3,4. He married ANNA MARIA WITTMEYER5 December 16, 1755 in Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co. Pennsylvania5. She was born Abt. 1732 in Germany5, and died August 28, 1812 in Allegany Co., Maryland6.

Notes for GEORGE ADAM ECKHART:
{The first relative on my Charlotte Funks side of the family which we have information is George Adam Echard and his wife Mary. Research by Emma Loar Gaddis shows there were many different spellings of Echard (Eckart, Eckert, Eckhart). George signed his name as Echard on his Last Will so that is what we are using. There was an Adam Eckert born in Germany and was the grandson of Joeph Eckert of Westburg, Bavaria. Then there are Eckarts who originally came from Holland so we cannot be sure of the birthplace of this ancestor but some of the kinfolks think the Echards came from Holland, and others from Bavaria, Germany. We do know that George Echard sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on the ship "Union" (same ship as Jacob Loar) and took the oath of allegiance on Sept. 30, 1774. He located 10 miles west of Cumberland, Maryland in the year 1780. (Where he was from 1774 to 1780 is unknown. A small village sprung up on George's land which was named Echart Mines and is said to have been named for him. The village was laid out July 12, 1789. George and Mary Echard had 5 children. One of whom was Sarah Echard. It appears that George Adam Echard died in 1806 as his will was probate on August 10, 1806.} Source: v62t2295.FTW

{!Info from H.A. Brown (see file) 6 Nov 1995. Shows POB as Minfeld or Zweibreucken, Pfalz, Germany of Westburg, Bavaria, Germany. Says also lived in Philadelphia Co, PA (now Montgomery Co.)
Occupation: Farmer
Religion: Christ Church, Cumberland, Allegany, MD (now St. Paul's Lutheran).
Possible Revolutionary War vet (1775-83) Father: possibly George Adam Eckhart. H.A. Brown goes on to say, "arrived at Philadelphia, PA, Saturday 11 Aug 1750 aboard the ship, "Patience," under Capt. Hugh Steel from Rotterdam via Cowes (Isle of Wight), England. Since there were 2 George Eckhart's aboard, it is possible that the other Geo. Eckhart was his father. They had probably departed from their home in Southern Germany as early as May 1750 & had spent weeks floating down the Rhine passing many custom posts & spending several more weeks at custom posts at Rotterdam in the Netherlands & at Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. George Adam may have been the George Adam Eckhart who in 1768 at Annapolis, MD swore allegiance to the Province of Maryland & the British Empire. The George Adam Eckart who arrived in Philadelphia in 1774 may have been son George returning from a visit to Germany. George Adam used 'Adam' in
his daily life. From the marriage record and baptisms of his first 2 children, he lived in the Telford area of Franconia Twp., Philadelphia County, PA (Montgomery Co. after 1787). After the birth of Elizabeth, Adam purchased 100 acres in Frederick Co. (now in Western Carroll Co., MD) on 8 Aug 1761. (G/119 LDS #13937)" H.A. Brown goes on w/details of land transactions (see file; he cites H/471 LDS #13938) Says Adam 'Eckhard' marked with an 'X' & Thomas & Charles Beatty were witnesses. He continues, "On 29 Oct 1781, Adam 'Ecker' sold land for 110 pounds to Henry Stevenson on Pipe Creek...In the early 1780's, after the sale of the land on Pipe Creek, Geo. Adam moved to
Allegany Co., MD, near Cumberland and began planting crops. Around 1788, Adam & sons, John & George, rec'd patent rights to 50 acre lots as established land holders at a time when Allegany Co. was broken up & lands granted Rev. War Vets for service. No record of svc by the Eckharts has been found indicating they rec'd their patents as occupants & not vets.... In 1815, during construction of the National Road, coal was discovered on this same land. The area today is known as Eckhart & Eckhart Mines. This village was laid out 12 Jul 1789 1 1/2 mi. from Frostburg in Cumberland Co. In 1940 the pop. was 2300. George & Mary's deaths are recorded in books of Christ's Church (St. Paul's Lutheran Church) Cumberland, MD. The German Lutheran Church which son, John, had contributed to was in decay by 1940 & Eckhart Mines was served only by the Methodists & Baptists. Eckhart Mines was a great mining district & had large beds of very rich coal underneath." Will of George Adam Echard copied by H.A. Brown dated 1 Apr 1799 & probated 10 Aug 1806 is in file.

{!Info. from H.A. Brown 6 Nov 1995. May have been George Adam Eckart, Jr. Sources of info: Will of father, George Adam Echard; Baptismal Records of Indianfield Lutheran Church; Mrg. records of Hill Lutheran Church; "The Loar Genealogy" & "History of Allegany County"; 1810 Frederick Co., MD Census; Parish Register of St. Benjamin's on Pipe Creek, Carroll Co., MD, 1786, 1788 & 1789; land records; his will; tombstone in Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ Cemetery. H.A. Brown says there is conflict between age on headstone (65 yrs., 11 mos., 20 days) & that of church records, but thinks that is the result of confusion on the part of his children. Andy Brown says, "The "Loar Genealogy" & "History of Allegany County" indicates that George, Jr. arrived in Philadelphia on 30 Sep 1774 from Rotterdam with Jacob Loar, the future husband of his sister, Sarah. If so, it is probable he was returning from a visit to relatives in Germany. Like his father & bro., John, he received a 50 acre lot in Allegany Co. for possible service during the Rev. War." Andy Brown says this George & his sons chose to spell their name 'Eckert'. See detailed info in file.

!25 June 1996 traveled to Eckhart Mines, MD w/Sally DiSabatino, Laura Mayfield Smith & Ashley Mayfield. Drove thru Cumberland, Frostburg & Eckhart. Noted headstones of some Eckhart's in Cemetery in Eckhart. Met Minister at Baptist Church in Eckhart. He said it was good we had gotten a photo of the Eckhart Mines p.o. because it will soon be torn down. He suggested for more Eckhart info we call Dr. Jonathan Eckhart (Chiropractor), (office: 203 Green St, Cumberland, MD 21501; home: Marsh Hill Rd, McHenry, MD 21541), (301) 722-6011. (Got his answering service.) Same eve, called John Edwin Eckhart, 15606 National Highway, S.W., Cumberland, MD 21502, (301) 689-1236, and his father, Harry Eckhart, P.O. Box 268, Barton, MD 21521, (301) 463-6651. (Harry is 69 years old.) Found out these
are brother and father of Dr. Jonathan Eckhart. (He has been the most interested in fam hist.) John Eckhart, son of George Adam Eckhart, is Harry's 3rd Great Grandfather. Harry Eckhart said he has 18 pages of Eckhart family history which he will send to me. Said the orig Eckhart farm was 600+ acres extending into what is now Frostburg. The Eckhart mansion stood close to where the McDonald's and Food Lion are in Frostburg now. There is actually a saw mill there now. Nearby there are some small cottages built on rock foundations; those were the slave quarters. Everything was left to John, & he became quite a wealthy man. Harry said Matthew St. Claire Clark bought the Eckhart
farm. John Edwin Eckhart said a man by the name of Jenkins ended up with Consolidation Coal Co., and they bought out the Eckhart Farm (???). Harry said he knows where the property is where the Eckhart's are buried...said it is by the locust trees...and he could show us where it is. Said development is crowding it out, and there is an effort to save it. (Hopefully, there will be more info in the sheets he sends.)

!6 Nov 1995 History received from H. Andrew Brown shows spelling Eckhart & dob as 18 Jul 1761 (rather than 16 Jul...date w/which we had her Temple work done) obtained from her baptismal record; she was baptized 9 Aug 1761 at Indianfield Lutheran Church in the Telford area of Franconia Twp, Philadelphia County (Montgomery Co. after 1787), PA. She was sponsored at her baptism by Henry Kramar & wife. Andy Brown says she was still living in 1850 & showed yr. of birth as 1761 in PA. (I assume he obtained this from 1850 MD census records.)
Shows same mrg. date as we have & thinks they probably mrd in Cumberland area of Allegany Co., MD; don't know his source...he lists many.) Lists various sources, including book, "History of Allegany Co., MD." Based on A. Brown's info, I have POB for Elizabeth to PA & POD to Eckhart Mines rather than Eckart (?). (Prior to that I had somehow assumed Allegany Co., MD.)

!22 Nov 1995 print out from Blanche McFadden indicates that ordinances have been performed for Elizabeth/Elisabeth Eckert/Eckhart now a total of at least 3 times apparently because Temple Ready software didn't pick up different spellings of names: EliSabeth ECKERT (based on christening record) Bap, Endw, SP 1976 St. Geo. Temple (as noted); EliZabeth ECKHART (based on baptismal record) Bap, Endw, SP, 1989 Salt Lake Temple; and Laurie and I completed bap 8 Aug 1995 & endw 14 Sep 1995, Orlando Temple. There was also work done for Maria Elizabeth Eckhart (same parents) but different christening date & I believe must be a sister. Andrew Brown shows sister Mary Elizabeth in his research (see 164-4, p. 9 of 16). Place of marr from IGI SS based on marr record. Emma Minshew confirms Temple Ready wouldn't have picked it up because of different spellings, but says christening record should be most accurate & to request film w/that. Found out that Andy Brown gave permission for the Fam Grp to be submitted even tho' he is not LDS.

{!Hazel A. Hosfelt who obtained dates from tombstone located on a private farm near Frostburg, MD.

!Hazel A. Hosfelt says born Chard's Flats, MD.

!Letter from Ruth (Mrs. Bernard W.) Steyer which includes pages from Family Bible, states, "Looking in an old trunk, I came across a newspaper printed in July, 1888; here is part of the article: "Tobias Steyer, born Nov. 7, 1730 in Bundershofen, Upper Alsace, Germany, settled in Manheim, York County, where was born John Tobias, June 20, 1762. John T. serving through the Revolutionary War, married Elizabeth Eckert June 30, 1789, to whom were sons: John, Absalom, George, and John Jacob; daughters: Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Catharine." This is also in book, History of Western Maryland, p. 1477, indicating that Steyer, McCulloh and other families settled there.

!Note: The only Manheim in the atlas is in Lancaster Co., parent county of York. Since 2 sources have shown him born in York Co., I have
shown that, but need to check Manheim, also.

!From Hazel A. Hosfelt: PA. German Pioneers of Straussburger and Hincke, Vol. 1 pg. 215 & Steyer Family Reunion Records of May 30, 1939, state that Tobias Steyer came to America in 1738 and settled in York Co., PA. Also that both Tobias & his so John Tobias, fought in the Revolutionary War & afterward the two rec'd. 200 acs. of land in Fayette Co., PA. for their services. Hazel Hosfelt further states "There is no record of Tobias Steyer fighting in the war." Records in the D.A.R. Magazine, Jul., 1976, state a Lt. rec'd. 200 acs. for this service. Hazel A. Hosfelt further states that John Tobias Steyer & his wife, Elizabeth, are buried in a private farm cemetery near Frostburg,
MD. She said, "My husband and I visited this cemetery in 1970; there were only 2 graves or markers in the cemetery (very small) burial ground surrounded by a beautiful antique iron fence. Believe me, it was in the woods so deep only God and the birds knew it was there. We were very fortunate to find a man who farmed that acreage 50 yrs. ago. We went through plenty woods to find it. We placed the American flag on his grave. He joined the Army at the age of 12 yrs., and served the duration of the war; raised a family and lived
to be 91 yrs. and his wife 94 yrs. I believe they were of good stock. In those days it was pretty rough." She goes on to list their children.

G.
Butler and there formed themselves into a congregation of the English Lutheran Church. Among the original members were ... John Tobias Steyer, Jacob Loar. These men were very active in the interests of the Church and greatly assisted Mr. Butler in his duties." John Eckard donated property for Church at east end of Frostburg. {!Info. from H.A. Brown, 6 Nov 1995: NOT CERTAIN ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL. Andy Brown says, "I have found it odd that John Eckhart's MD baptism does not appear in MD Lutheran records, but because I do not know his full name, it is possible that it was John Peter or Peter Johann.... In addition, I am not so sure that the Peter listed belongs to our line. It is possible that there were 2 Geo. Adam Eckert/Eckharts living in the same MD locale at the same time, both married to a Maria.... For those reasons I carry question marks before the names of Peter and Maria Elizabeth & advise you to do so, too....Peter Eckhart's sponsors at his baptism were Peter Baltzel & wife, Catherine, at
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, MD. One was the God parents to 2 of the children. I also note that one was Hans (Johann) Peter
Balzel/Baltzel (arrived Philadelphia Aug 1750 as did Eckartts) -- perhaps John Eckhart was Johann Peter Eckhart named after Johann Peter Balzel/Baltzel.... If not John, Peter was not mentioned in his father's 1799 will & may have died young." See file for more details.

Notes for JACOB LOAR:
V62t2295.FTW

On the same ship "Union" (same ship Echards were on) that sailed from Rotterdam, Holland was a man named Jacob Loar. (Other spellings - Lower and Lohr). He took the oath of allegiance the same day as George Echard. He was born in about 1747 but as with George Adam Echard, it cannot be determined if he immigrated from Holland or Germany. Jacob was of a religious nature and in faith must have been a Lutheran as he with his brother Henry and others, built and organized the Pioneer Lutheran Church in Frostburg, Md, in 1812. Jacob and George Echard probably served in the Revolutionary War. Jacob Loar married the 3rd child of George and Mary Echard, Sarah Echard. They established their home on a military lot at Eckert Mines, Md. where they lived the rest of their lives. They had 11 children. Jacob Loar died in 1827 at the age of 80.

Notes for ELIZABETH LOAR:
V62t2295.FTW

John and Elizabeth Funk moved by prairie schooner first to Fayette County, Pa. in 1809 and later to Whitelyl Township, Greene County, Pa. There is a legend that John Funk and Betsy lived near Uniontown, Pa. and for a time at the foot of the mountain in Laural Hill Range near a place called "White Rock". The legend states that while the children were out looking for cows, they accidentally discovered the body of Polly Williams at the foot of the cliff. Betsy immediately reported it to the County authorities at Uniontown. Polly William's lover was tried, convicted, and hanged for the offense. This incident is graphically related in Rev. Hanna's History of Greene County, Pa. John Funk served in the war of 1812.

This couple had 8 children as follows: Jacob, John Loar, Sara, Susan, Joseph, George, Elizabeth, and Henry. They moved to a homestead near Jacksonville in Greene Co. in about 1850. Elizabeth "Betsy" died June 9, 1874 at the age if 86 and John died Dec. 24, 1842 at Jacksonville, Greene Co. Pa. at the age of 64. Both were very religious people, generous to a fault and helpful in every need. They were buried in the Braddock Cemetery near Graysville, Pa. Evidently John and Elizabeth were quite wealthy land owners as our Grandfather,(written by Arlene Brovald) Dennis Funk, along with his siblings received a sum "that was no small affair" from the estate since his father Dr. John Loar Funk had died before the estate was settled. In the year 1949, a grandson still lived on their homestead in Greene Co. Pa. Unknown if he is still there.

Notes for SARAH JANE LOAR:
{Ethel Pauline Osborn remembered sitting outside under a tree with her tall, thin grandmother - her motherís mother - watching her listen to the birds sing with a big black horn in her ear, because her grandmother had been born almost deaf. She was a good cook, and had 3 boys (Ollie, Henry, Melvin) and 2 girls (Mae. Bessie). She was famous for growing Easter lilies. Her sister, known to the whole town as Aunt Jenny, was famous for raising flowers to give away. Sarah Jane died (holding her beloved Easter lilies) when she was in her 60ís of liver cancer.} Source: Rosemarie LaRose Renner
