I found a Peter C. Eckhart (sic) and wife Louisa in the 1900 census for NYC, and he was born in 1831. He came to US in 1856.

Lived in: 12 Ward New York, New York County, New York
Series: T623 Microfilm: 1109 Book: 2 Page: 178

Next door is his son Peter C. Eckhardt Jr. Both are in real estate.
And son Louis is there also.

When I checked the LDS listings, Peter Jr. is listed and there are links to his ancestry. If you're not familiar with the LDS data base, go to:

and put Peter Eckhardt into the search form. Put in 1865 as the birth date (for Peter Jr.) and you'll get the whole family going back to the early 18th century. (!)

Peter and Louisa can be found in the 1860 census, on page 430 of 22 W., Dist 2. in Manhattan. He's a carpenter at that point and she works in 'fancy goods'.

Also found both Peters in the 1869 and 1890 directories for NYC, online at

Eckhardt Peter C. fancygds. 619 Ninth av
Eckhardt Peter C. real estate, 693 Ninth av. h 400 W. 47th
Eckhardt Peter C. jr. real estate, 693 Ninth av. h 400 W. 52d

They don't seem to turn up in the 1880 census.

They aren't related to my NY Eckhardts who came from Alsace, but having looked at all the Eckhardts in search of mine, it wasn't hard to find yours;-)

By the way, are you the Chuck Eckhardt who is a Civil War reenactor?

Best wishes,
Joe E.
