Eckles/Hancock in Posey Co., IN
Hello- It has been a while since I have done any posting. here is my Eckles/Hancock line as far as I have it.
First some Eckles and Coonrads who are probably related to me but I am not sure or to what degree: In the early 1800s there were many Akles, Eccles, Eckles and Echols in North Carolina. The 1820 Census for Tennessee included these families: Maury County: Moses Echoles, Robertson County: William Conrad, Phillip Coonrod. Williamson County: John Echols. Wilson County:John Coonrod, Joel Echols Jr., John Echols. In 1830 in Wilson Co., Tennessee John Echols, Jacob Coonrod, Reuben Coonrod, John Coonrod and William C. Coonrad.
It is part of family legend that there is Native American in the Eckles at least as far as the children of John Ecles and Harriett Hancock. Whether this passed down through John's parents or the Hancocks I do not know. Nicholas Coonrad was a signer of the Cumberland Compact in 1780. Descendants were known to have lived in Wilson and Robertson Counties, Tennessee. Other Coonrads/Coonrods living in Posey Co., Indiana included Reuben, his wife Rebecca Nash and their daughter Pearl and son Eugene. Other Wilson Co. marriage included Isaham Wynne and Sally Eckels on 5 April 1806, John Echols and Judith Compton on 3 July 1806, Richard A. Echols and Abigail Brown on 16 October 1820, Davis Eckels and Lytsy Bradshaw on 8 August 1823, Isham Joiner and Rachel Eckols on 21 September 1825, Joel Echols and Nancy Compton on 27 December 1832, John T. Echols and Lurancy Clifton on 19 February 1835 and James Eckols and Elizabeth Ferrel on 18 February 1836.
My Line:
1: Joseph Eckols may have been born in North Carolina. He married Margaret Coonrod in Wilson Co., Tennessee. They are listed by John Smith bondsman 27 May 1829 and 27 May 1830 by James Taylor J. P. Margaret Echols appears in the 1850 Census forLynn Twp.., Posey County, Indiana, where she gives her birthplace as South Carolina around 1812. She married Blackford Stallings.
