Eddell Family Carlton, N Yorkshire.

I am undertaking some Genealogical research into the Eddell family, with whom I am distantly related. Its an unusual surname and very uncommon in the UK. Only about 20 or so decedents seem to survive today.

The roots of the Eddell family can be traced back to the late 1700s when John Eddell, a farmer, married Sarah Booth and settled in Carlton, near Selby, Yorkshire, UK. Despite giving birth to a dozen children, over half of whom died young, Sarah lived to the ripe old age of 81 and is at rest in the churchyard at Carlton. Over the years, many of her descendents stayed in the Carlton area, although some moved to Leeds, London and Preston.

Through my research feel I have identified the majority of Eddells from this line, but a few frustrating gaps remain. There are a few Eddells in the USA, particularly Indiana and the East coast and would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me of their roots. Perhaps the USA Eddells are derived from Edels (German) or Eddall (UK). Or perhaps they are related to one or two family members who seem to have died without issue or have just disappeared from the records after birth.

One link which has been suggested is that the surname Eddell which fails to feature prior to cir 1760 is derived from the Weddell family, explorers and landed gentry in the UK, whos ancestry can be traced to about 1450 or even further. I would love to know. . . . .

Needless to say, if any of you kind people out there have any further information, or perhaps if I am duplicating work already done by others I would love to hear from you, either directly, or through this forum. I will be happy to exchange the results of my work.

Best wishes and thanks

Andrew Easterday
