Hi, some of this has been previously posted to the various above-mentioned message boards. Going over my assorted notes this morning, I decided to send this out in total to see if anyone can help me with any of these families in hope that I can definitely tie down the parents/siblings of Robert B. Thurston and Nancy Brown Thurston, who married in Goochland County, Virginia in 1830. Thanks for any and all help!
Robert and Nancy were married in Goochland in 1830. They had:
Sarah A. Thurston
Mary J. Thurston
Napoleon B. Thurston
Marcellus D. Thurston
Elizabeth Thurston
Monteller T. Thurston
Martha Jane Thurston
Nancy Thurston
William Newton "Casic" Thurston
Without going into every detail on the above, here is a snynopsis:
Sarah married, in Goochland, a Slappe or Glass, died about 1855 in Goochland.
Mary J. married a Sloan/Slone/or Stone in Goochland, and died 7/1/1855 in Goochland.
Napoleon married Sarah "Sally" Deadmore/Detamore/Detmore in Washington County, Va.
Marcellus Dabney married Leella "Ella" Lewis Moss* in Kanawha County, WV.
All the children listed below were born in Kanawha County:
Monteller T. married Josephine Alice Finney.
Martha Jane married Andrew Godbey.
Nancy died in childhood.
William Newton married Laura Emma Legg.
I have extended information on the Kanawha Valley Thurstons.
*When Ella and Marcellus married in Kanawha County, she gave her maiden name as McCauley. I could never find a record of her birth to a McCauley. Then, I was sent a copy of a family Bible page, which shows her maiden name was actually Moss. I had further information as to that last name from a family history from another of Marcellus and Ella's descendants. I also found a newspaper mention of John Moss visiting his daughter, Ella Thurston, in Union District (where Marcellus and the other Thurstons resided), and returning to his home in Virginia. A verbal source and the penned source, indicate that Nancy Brown Thurston and Ella Moss Thurston's mother, Katheryn/Catharine were sisters and were "from around the Albemarle/Louisa area."
What record of marriage I found for John Moss** and Katheryn Brown Moss showed Katheryn's father as William Brown and her mother's maiden name of Edds. I found a marriage record for a William Brown and Elizabeth Edds on 2/10/1816, in Book 122 page 161 or Book 1&2, page 161, Louisa County.
**John and Katheryn Brown Moss had at least these children:
Leela "Ella" Lewis Moss; Alice Moss, who married a Bourne; Andrew Moss; and Charles Moss, who had sons named Frank (who had about five children) and Compton; and a son, named Thomas, who supposedly operated a mill on the Pamunkey River. Earlier, I had been told it was Thomas Brown who operated the mill.
Supposedly, John left Katheryn and both remarried. Katheryn married Robert Glass and had four boys (at least):
Newton, who married a Susie....
William, who married Lucy Jones, and had at least 4 children.
James, married and had at least one child, named Harry Glass.
Booker married a Lillian and had children.
John Moss supposedly later married his cousin, Nancy Moss, and had children.
Katheryn Brown Moss and Nancy Brown Thurston, apparently the children of this William Brown and Elizabeth Edds Brown, were supposedly two of seven sisters, and at least three brothers. The Brown girls were supposedly Nancy, Sarah, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary, other names not known. Male names not known.
Ella Moss was born in 1843. Family history shows her father's middle name as Dove...John Dove Moss. I have found various records showing the middle initial as "D" and/or "O." I know the Moss family was large, so there could have been a mixup on this middle initial. Adding to this confusion, is that I ran across a record for a marriage of a John Dove Moss to a Sally Deadmore Brown prior to 1843, with that being the only information on that and I failed to record where I ran across that...probably in one of the books listing early marriages in Virginia.
Adding to this confusion is a penned history of Robert Thurston, done by his grandaughter. I found discrepancies in some of the info she put in that history for one of her grandchildren, for example:
She said her grandfather Robert's name was Robert Emmett. I've never found reference in any records here to that name for him. She did have a brother named Emmett, who was my grandfather. All records for him show my grandfather's name as Robert Emmett. But, she showed it as Emmett H.
I have chosen to go with official records here in Kanawha County which show Robert B. Thurston for my gggrandfather, Monteller T. for my ggrandfather, and Robert Emmett for my grandfather. The only other Emmett I've run across with Virginia connections was, I believe, a son of William Plummer Thurston in Louisa County.
So, if anyone can take the time and go over this bit of info and make any connections for me, I'd be much appreciative. Thanks ever so much. Look forward to hearing from you.
