My early pioneer Edgington/Edington/Edgiton/Egerton & etc. were illiterate as most of the common folk. They relied on the educated on how to spell their names and marked their court documents with an "X". If you collect enough 1s rate documents and copies of originals - you'll have many different spellings - all for the same individual. Unless they had a very short life.
