No where have I been able to find out anything about my mysterious SAMUEL EDNEY (listed as "Samuel E. Edney" on his daughter's death certificate). I have begun to think that somewhere something is wrong. I would almost believe that the informant who gave the information on his daughter's death certificate was in error, except that his daughter, Mary Jane (Edney) Smith, herself gave his name as Samuel Edney in a newspaper interview before her death. This newspaper article says that her parents "Samuel and Amelia Edney came {to Missouri} from North Carolina in the early days". SAMUEL (E.?) EDNEY married AMELIA SPENSE/SPENCE by at least 1844 either in Virginia or North Carolina. Amelia (sometimes written as "Milly" or "Emily") was born ca 1807 in North Carolina. By 1850, Samuel appears to have been deceased. I found a "Milly Edney" on the 1851 census in Crawford County, Missouri (Dent County was created from Crawford County) but her age on this census is not correct nor is the place of birth (Virginia). I am so confused!! Their daughter Mary Jane Edney was born on 8 jan 1848 in Salem, Dent County, Missouri. So Samuel had to have died between 1848 and 1850. I found Amelia Edney as a widow on the 1861 Dent County, Missouri census. Could Amelia have been a second wife of Samuel Edney's? I really have no idea, even, of Samuel's age. Perhaps he was a lot older than Amelia.

Some of their other children and grandchildren had names like Joseph, Alfred, Rufus, etc. which seem to be names used by the North Carolina Edney family.

At this point, I don't know where to go from here. I have been to Dent County, Missouri, but did not have any luck in finding them.

Every Samuel Edney I locate has already been claimed and a wife has been determined for him. So.....WHO WAS MY SAMUEL EDNEY?????
