It is very likely that the middle initial is wrong. Your Samual probably came from Camden or Pasquotank Co. NC. Spence is a common name here. Unfortunately I don't get off work in time to go to the courthouse and look at deeds and wills.
It was not unusual for a wife to die and the husband to remarry in those days. In fact families in those days were almost as complicated because of death as they are now because of divorce.
What were the names of the children and grandchildren? Are there any old letters or other documents that mention names. There may be a mention of someone that you don't think is relaited that could give someone else a clue. I know that James P Marchant and John Thomas Old and Nathan Wilkins had a brother-in-law named Samuel Edney. James P Marchant and Nathan Wilkins both went to Dyer Co. Tenn.
