I don't know of any connection to Issac Newton but in Camden and Pasquotank Co NC there were lots of Newton Edneys in the 1700s and early 1800s. So far I have tried to avoid that branch of my family because certian names are repeated so often. Aperently the first Edney to come here married a woman whose madien name was Rasher. There were lots of Samuel Edneys, Robert Edneys and Newton Edneys and some John Edneys. Some of the Newton Edneys had Rasher for a middle name. In the early days the only Edney that used a middle name was Newton Rasher Edney.
I have heard that all of the Edneys in the US are decended from the ones in Camden and Pasquotank Co. I dont know if it is true or not.
