I too am looking for an EDNEY who came from England. John PITTIS was the eldest son of Thomas and Mary (Clarke) PITTIS, of Newport, Isle of Wight. He was born 3 June 1774. He married at Carrisbrooke, Mary DORE. John and Mary PITTIS had a daughter, Mary PITTIS, who married Robert Jewell EDNEY. John PITTIS chartered a ship, the "RESOLUTION" for his entire family (including Mary and Robert J. EDNEY) and set sail from the Port of Cowes, I.W., 9 May 1819, and landed at Baltimore, Maryland, USA, 6 July 1819. Robert Jewell EDNEY was born 26 FEB. 1792, Milton, Parish of Portsea, Hampshire, baptised, Kingston Church, same parish, son of William and Sarah (JEWELL) EDNEY. William EDNEY, Robert's father, left 9000 pounds in a bank in England, and by the terms of his will, his widow, stepmother of Robert, had a life income from this money and also from a farm known as "Edney at Herney". This farm was of consiserable extent and had a coal mine, William Edney being known as "the coal merchant". At the death of the widow the entire property was to go to Robert, who was given possession of the will and brought it to America. The date of the stepmother's death is unknown. In 1844, Henry, eldest son of Robert, and a Pittis relative were about to go to England to claim the estate, when Henry was taken ill and died in 1845. Robert by reason of naturalization complications and the opposition of his wife to taking a sea voyage, never went to England to push his claim. In 1865 he was stricken with paralysis and died in 1866. The will was given to an attorney in America who died, and with his death the will was lost and never recovered. I would be very interested in finding out anything about his ancestry, and about his mother's people the JEWELL'S. Do you have any idea who this family was? The PITTIS' were related to the ARNOLD'S of Isle of Wight. Robert Jewell EDNEY was my gggg-grandfather.
Thanks for any help you may have,
Doug
