I have "Bygod Eggleston Englishman and Colonist" I have read the updates on James Egglestons first wife identified as Margaret Harker. However this fails to explain how Bigod got his name. The authors suggest that Simon Bigod, Esq. Of Scagglethorpe acted as godfather to both Bigod Eggleston and Bigod Blades. If this were so the boys would have been named Simon not Bigod. A surname used as a Christian name always indicates some blood kinship. A few examples from James Egglestons time. Conway Blennerhasset;his grandmother was Avice Conway. Harman Blennerhasset;his grandmother was Elizabeth Harman.Dudley Bradstreet;his mother was Ann Dudley. Rev. Hawte Wyatt;his greatgrandmother was Jane Hawte. It is logical to suppose that Bigod Egglestons mother or grandmother was a Bigod. The same would be true for Bigod Blades. My reconstruction of Bigods ancestry is as follows:
1) Simon Dodsworth, Yeoman of Settrington will drawn 8 jun 1586 Bailiff of the manor of Settrington 1584 married Agnes Harrison with 5 sons and 4 daughters
2) Mary Dodsworth 4th daughter married 8 Aug 1587 Simon Bigod, Esquire of Scagglethorpe
2) James Dodsworth, Yeoman of Settrington, 4th son married Mary Bigod of Malton, daughter of Edmund Bigod of Malton died 8 Oct 1566.(he was 3rd cousin of Sir Francis Bigod,Kt.executed 2 Jun 1537)
