Mary Matthews Elder of Dinwiddie, Brunswick and Campbell VA
Posted by: Bob Elder (ID *****6443) Date: September 22, 2011 at 14:12:20
  of 2779

The first record showing Joseph Elder and wife Mary is a 1762 deed for land in Brunswick County, Virginia. I've recently learned of the 1754 will of Samuel Matthews of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, naming wife Ann and children William, John, Mary and Elizabeth. There are few surviving records from Dinwiddie County for that period, but other records suggest that Mary Matthews, daughter of Samuel, was the wife of Joseph Elder. There's more information, including a link to the will, here:

I thank Harry Porter and Joyce Faison, Matthews family researchers, for sharing their data and ideas with me.
