I am really very grateful to you, Sylvia. You've certainly managed to track my family. Raymond and Violet Eley were my grandparents (recently deceased)and lived at 8 Lawrenny Avenue until the mid 1990s. I know that when they were first married they lived in 'rooms', which would account for the Dorset Street address, before taking over 8 Lawrenny Avenue from my uncle Reginald. They had two children - my father, Melvyn, and his sister, Sylvia! Both are still living in Cardiff.
The link with Merches Gardens also rings true. I remember my grandfather telling me that he moved there from Court Road. Its also entirely possible that my great-great-grandfather was called William because John Eley's eldest son was called William (my Uncle Billy)who died late 50's/early 60s. William Eley was actually an artist of some local renown. I have three of his paintings, dating from 1942, hanging in my house and am very keen to trace others particularly one of Jim Driscoll, Freddie Welch and another famous boxer who's name eludes me at the moment. Apparently Jim Driscoll's mother wanted to buy it but my great-grandmother, Catherine Eley (nee Russell) wouldn't sell it. One other interesting memory my grandfather passed on to me was that somehow we are related to Alan Jones (of Donkey Serenade fame).
Once again, I am very grateful to you Sylvia. The information you have un-earthed is fascinating. I'd love to know how you go about your research?
