In Reply to: Thomas Jefferson Ellis (1815-1891) of Fannin Co., GA by Robert Johnston Jr of 11951

I don't know if this helps but here are same raw notes about
Thomas Jefferson Dunn and one of his decedents Bill@suncam.com:

Ancestors of Jerdia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellis
Generation 1
Jerdia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellis (daughter of James W. ELLIS and Sarah Green) was born on 15 Mar 1892 in Georgia. She died on 22 Sep 1966 in Fort Pierce, Florida. Sarah Green died when Lizzie was very young. Sarah would have likely appeared in the 1890 census but almost all records from that census year were destroyed by fire.

1900 census of Murphy, Cherokee County, North Carolina:
James W. Ellis - head - age 41- May 1859 - 15 years married - he and both parents born in GA- farmer who rents his home - can read and speak English but cannot write.
Mary Ellis [Lizzie's stepmother]- wife- age 40 - b. Jan 1860 - 15 years married - mother of 5 children, 4 still living - she and both parents born in GA- can read, write and speak English
Otto Ellis - son - age 14 - b. Oct 1885- Single - he and both parents born in Georgia - can read, write and speak English

Lavada Ellis - daughter - age 7- b. May 1893- Single - she and both parents born in Georgia - Can speak English but cannot read or write

1910 census of Murphy Township, Brasstown Precinct, Cherokee County, North Carolina:
James Ellis - 52 - Head - married 13 years - Farmer - he and both parents born in NC - can read and write English
Mary Ellis - 52 - Wife -- married 13 years - mother of 4 children, 4 still living - born in GA, both parents born in NC - can read English but cannot write
Victor A. Ellis - 20- son - Farm laborer - single - he and his mother born in GA, father born in NC - can read and write English- attended school
Note: Lizzie is not with them. Her whereabouts in 1910 is unknown.

Lizzie married ___ PATTERSON presumably sometime before 12 June 1912 when their first child was born. His first name may have been Richard as suggested by Etta Marie Dunn Ladnier in a letter dated 29 January 1982 or it could have been Willis Leroy as recalled by Nellie Irene Dunn Eden in 2012. He was born in Georgia. He died sometime between Mar 1915 (when his youngest son was conceived) and 27 Nov 1919 (When Lizzie married SW Dunn). He died when someone threw a rock and hit him in the head while he was working on a roof.

Note from Irene Dunn Eden 18 Feb 2012: The year of death had to be 1914 or 1915, Roy [Willis Leroy Patterson] was a baby, someone threw a rock and it hit him in the temple. I think he was related to my dad's [Samuel Washington Dunn] first wife, a cousin, or brother.

The children of Lizzie and ___Patterson:
1.       Woodrow Wilson Patterson ...(12 Jun 1912 - 24 May 1979)
2.       Willis Leroy Patterson...(31 Dec 1915 - 24 Oct 1989)

Lizzie married Samuel Washington (Sam) DUNN (son of William Harrison DUNN and Sarah Jane PATTERSON) on 27 Nov 1919 in Madala, Georgia. He was born on 23 Dec 1875 in Pierceville, Georgia. He died on 17 Mar 1934 in Edgewater, Florida.

Sam was first married to Violet Malinda PATTERSON (daughter of William "Willis" Major Patterson and Louisa Jane Ritchie) on 25 Aug 1895 in Fannin County, Georgia. She died on 16 Feb 1918.

The children of Sam and Violet Dunn:
1.       Ettie Dunn was born on 10 Aug 1896 in Georgia. She married Thomas W. Tankersley. He was born on 14 Dec 1889 in Epworth, Fannin, Georgia. He died in 1919 in Fannin, Georgia.
2.       Mary Lucinda Dunn was born on 01 Jun 1899 in Georgia. She died in 1920 in Akron OH. She married Avery Williamson.

5.       Richard McKindly Dunn was born on 15 Jan 1904 in Georgia. He died in Akron, OH. He married Dora Ritchie.

7.       Amy Dunn was born on 25 Aug 1909 in Georgia. [Uncertain whether this is the same person as Amy Louisa Dunn above] She married Roy Ethridge.
8.       Thomas Dunn was born on 27 Oct 1912 in Georgia.
9.       Maggie Dunn was born on 03 Sep 1917 in Georgia. She married Jesse O'Neil.

Violet died at age 41, when her youngest child was less than 6-months old. Jerdia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellis 26 (who was then almost certainly a widow with 2 children) took care of Sam's children. She married Sam almost 2-years after Violet's death.

The children of Lizzie and Sam Dunn:
1.       William StClair Dunn (12 Sep 1920 - 25 Nov 1987) he married Emma Eliza Cobb on 09 Mar 1942.
2.       Wilburn Audalee Dunn (14 Jul 1923 - 05 Oct 1996) He was married 4 times.
3.       Etta Marie Dunn (23 Sep 1926 - ). She married Doug Ladnier.
4.       Nellie Irene Dunn (12 Jul 1931 - ). She first married Ray Limback and later married Keith Eden.

Generation 2
James W. ELLIS (grandson of Thomas J. Ellis and Sarah C Phillips) was born in May 1859 in Georgia. He died sometime after 12 Apr 1930 which was the date of the 1930 census for Murphy, Cherokee County, North Carolina. He was age 70 and his name appears with his second wife, Mary. James' parents are unknown but we know that he was the grandson of Thomas J. Ellis and Sarah C Phillips because he appears in their household in 1880 census of Toccoah, Fannin, Georgia which shows James W. Ellis 21, working on his grandfather's farm.

1880 census of Toccoah, Fannin, Georgia:
Thomas J. Ellis - age 65- Farmer
Sarah C Ellis - age 73 - wife - keeping house
James W. Ellis - age 21 - grandson - works on farm

His first wife was probably Sarah Green. They were married on 27 May 1885 in Fannin County Georgia. Sarah Green was born in 1858.

There are several clues to support the fact that Sarah Green was James' first wife:
1.       Nellie Irene Dunn Eden recalled that her grandmother's name was "Green".
2.       There is a Fannin County, Georgia marriage certificate dated 27 May 1885 between J.W. Ellis and Sarah Green.
3.       The 1880 census of Flint Hill, Fannin County, Georgia shows Margret Ellis 44, a widow with her 7 children but James is missing.
4.       The 1880 census of Toccoah, Fannin, Georgia, United States shows James W. Ellis 21, working on his grandfather's farm and 2 miles away at Morganton, Fannin, Georgia, a Sarah Green 22 is working as a servant in the household of Nathaniel and Rachael Parritt and their 4 children.
5.       The same 1880 census shows Andrew and Sarah Green and family on the farm adjacent to James' grandfather. This does not appear to be the parents of Sarah Green 22 but it may be an uncle.
6.       Otto Ellis, James first child was born just 5-months after the marriage.

Sarah Green and James W. ELLIS had the following children:
1.       Otto Brownlow Ellis was born on 03 Nov1885 in Georgia. He married Lillie M Ash. She was born in 1894 in North Carolina.
2.       Victor L Ellis was born in Dec 1888 in Georgia. He married Susan Dixie Ricks. She was born in Jul 1888 in North Carolina.
3.       Jerdia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellis was born on 15 Mar 1892 in Georgia. She died on 22 Sep 1966 in Fort Pierce, Florida. She had a twin brother who was either stillborn or died shortly after birth.

Sarah Green died when her youngest daughter was an adolescent (date unknown). James Ellis married again to Mary L. Patterson who was a widow of ___ Patterson.

The children of Mary and ___Patterson:
1.       Lavada "Vadie" Patterson (May 1893 - unknown date of death)

NOTE: It is necessary to examine Generation 4 before Generation 3in order to identify James W. Ellis' parent from among his grandparent's children. James surname is Ellis which would mean that his parent was one of the male children of Thomas and Sarah but the daughters cannot be ruled out. If an unmarried daughter was the parent of James then he would have been given the Ellis surname.

Generation 4
Thomas J. Ellis was born in 1815 in North Carolina. He married Sarah C
PHILLIPS who was born about 1808 in North Carolina.

Sarah C PHILLIPS and Thomas J. Ellis had the following children:
1.       Thomas Newton Ellis was born in 1831 in North Carolina. He married Margarett Shaffer. She was born in 1836 in North Carolina.
2.       Mary E Ellis was born in 1836 in North Carolina.
3.       Nancy A Ellis was born in 1837 in North Carolina.
4.       Zillah Angeline Ellis was born in 1839 in North Carolina.

Generation 3
Examining each of Thomas J Ellis and Sarah C Phillips children to determine which one is the parent of James W. Ellis:

Thomas Newton Ellis (son of Thomas J. Ellis and Sarah C PHILLIPS) was born in 1831 in North Carolina. He married Margarett Shaffer who was born in 1836 in Tennessee.

Margarett Shaffer and Thomas Newton Ellis had the following children:
1.       Ross or Reese Ellis was born in 1854 in North Carolina
2.       William Ellis was born in 1856 in North Carolina.
3.       John Ellis was born in 1858 in North Carolina.
4.       James Ellis was born in 1860 in Georgia.
5.       Fansa Ellis was born in 1860 in Georgia
6.       Sarah Ellis born in 1862 in North Carolina
7.       Enoch Ellis was born in 1868 in Georgia

9.       Laura Ellis was born in 1873 in Georgia

1860 census of Georgia Militia District 1047, Fannin, Georgia-
13 July 1860:
Thomas Ellis - 29 male - farm hand- b. NC - value of personal estate $100
Margaretts Ellis - 24 female- house keeper - b. TN
       Reese Ellis - 6 male - b. NC
       Williams Ellis - 4 male - b. NC
       John Ellis - 2 male - b. NC
       James Ellis 4/12 male - b. GA

1870 census of Militia District 1130, Fannin, Georgia- 27 July 1870:
       Thomas - 37 male-farmer- value of personal estate $200 - b. NC
Margarett was not present in the household.
Rosa - 17 female - keeping house - did not attend school could read but not write. (This child is usually reported as a male named Ross or Reese) - b. NC
William - 15 male - works on farm house - did not attend school could read but not write. - b. NC
John - 12 male - works on farm house - did not attend school could not read or write. - b. NC
James Ellis - 10 male- did not attend school and could not read or write- b. GA
       Sarah - 8 female - at home- b. GA
       Enoch - 2 male- b. GA

1880 census of Flint Hill, Fannin, Georgia, 10 June 1880
       Margret Ellis - 44 female - keeping house - b.TN, father b. FL, Mother b. TN
       Ross A. Ellis - 26 male - laborer - b. NC, father b. NC, mother b. TN
       John Ellis - 22 male - laborer - b. NC, father b. NC, mother b. TN
       Fansa Ellis - 20 male - laborer - b. GA, father b. NC, mother b. TN
Sarah Ellis - 18 female - works on farm - b. NC, father b. NC, mother b. TN
Enoch Ellis - 13 male - laborer on farm - b. GA, father b. NC, mother b. TN
       Harvey Ellis - 9 male - b. GA, father b. NC, mother b. TN
       Laura Ellis - 7 female - b. GA, father b. NC, mother b. TN

CONCLUSION: The James Ellis in this family is probably not the James W. Ellis that worked on his grandfather's farm because:
1.       They both appear in the 1870 census in different households.
2.       Fansa Ellis in the 1880 census of Flint Hill is probably actually James Ellis of the Thomas Newton Ellis and Margarett Shaffer family. The age is correct and the name Fansa Ellis appears in this record only. James W. Ellis was working on his grandfather's farm in 1880.

Generation 3 (continued)
Mary E Ellis was born in 1836 in North Carolina. She is on her father's farm in the census of 1850, 1860, and 1870 but not in 1880. Mary would have been 23 when James W. was born and may have been pregnant when the 1860 census was taken. There is no evidence that she was ever married.

Nancy A. Ellis was born in 1837 in North Carolina. She is on her father's farm in the census of 1850 but not after that. Other trees on Ancestry.com report that she died in 1850 at age 13 which means that she died 10 years before James W. was born and is therefore not his mother.

Zillah "Zilly" Angeline Ellis was born in 1839 in North Carolina. She is on her father's farm in the census of 1850 and 1860 but in 1870 she was married to James Ledford and her 2-year old son James and 1-year old daughter Rebecca. Zilly's James is 9-years too young to be James W. and they both appear in the 1870 census in different households. Zilly Ellis is not the mother of James W. Ellis.

James M. Ellis was born in 1841 in North Carolina. He appears on his father's farm in 1850 and 1860 and enlists in the confederate army 20 Feb 1862. He survived the war and married Nancy A Thurman on 24 Jan 1887 in Gilmer County GA. Nothing points to James M. Ellis as the father of James W. Ellis but nothing rules him out.

Sarina E. "Vinna" Ellis was born in 1844 in North Carolina. She is on her father's farm in the census of 1850 and 1860 but not after that. She would have been a 15 year old when James W. was born therefore she and her younger siblings are ruled out.

CONCLUSION: The most likely candidates for parent of James W. Ellis are Mary E. Ellis and James M. Ellis.
