My great great grandfather was John Blackston Ellis of Hamilton County FL but was born in GA according the census records. His son was William Riley Ellis of Columbia Co FL. William Riley's son Thomas (Roan) Rowan Ellis was my grandfather. My mother was the youngest child of Thomas Rowan Ellis. John Blackston Ellis was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Natural Bridge near Tallahasse Fla 6Mar1865. There is a monument there with his name on it as well as two other Confederate troups that were willed there. John Blackston Ellis 1817/1818. He received 700 acres in Hamilton Co Fl thru a Federal land grant for fighting in the Indian Wars of 1838. I have his ORIGINAL will of John Blackston Ellis (there is NO OTHER COPY) as well as the ORIGINAL marriage license to his wife Rosetta Melissa Johns in 5Dec1842 of me so I cannot give you the day and month. I will try to locate it. William Riley Ellis was also in the CSA at the same time. However he was AWOL at the time of the battle. Co B 1st Florida Reserves. My grandfather Thomas Roan Ellis told my father that the Ellis family originally came from Whiteville area i.e. Columbia Co. NC. I have not traced the family beyond the tax rolls for the two Ellis brothers in Georgia. This is the first I have heard of "Indian Trader". But it is my understanding that Rosetta Melissa Johns Ellis (the wife) was Indian and her father came from Franklin Co N.C. I do have a photo of her. She is buried at Salem Primative Baptist church in Lake City (Columbia Co Fla) having been born 24Nov1826. Died 26July1915. I am interested in hearing your information on the John Ellis Indian Trader. Effective 6/3/2012 mty e-mail will be BJThomas24@att.net.
