DNA Project Results

The ongoing Allison/Ellison/Ellyson DNA project (which started over two years ago) is continuing to help many of us learn more about our origins.

Several participants in the Allison/Ellison DNA project trace their ancestry back to Scotland. DNA test results have recently revealed that there are two unrelated lines of Allisons/Ellisons whose ancestors lived on farms near the town of Strathaven in Lanarkshire. Several Allisons and Ellisons have found cousins with both surnames that they previously knew nothing about.

I have recently discovered that my ALLISON/ELLISON ancestors were originally from farms near Strathaven in Lanarkshire, Scotland. My brother and my 4th cousin are both part of the group that has most recently found its Lanarkshire roots, thanks to new DNA test results. The DNA score of an ALLISON male, who still lives in Lanarkshire and who has ancestors who've lived there for many generations, matches the DNA score of my Allison relatives who live in the United States. Until now, we've had no proof that our early ancestors came from Scotland, although we have had family lore that this was the case. One of the participants is an ALLISON male whose ancestor migrated from Lanarkshire to New Zealand in the 1800s and the participant still lives in New Zealand. Another Allison male in this group lives in Canada..so we are quite an international group of ALLISONs. Two of the men in this group have the ELLISON surname. Some of the participants in this group of Allison/Ellison men with closely matching DNA scores trace their ancestry back to Lawrence ELLISON who was born in Yorkshire, England ca 1600. Our newest DNA test results show that some Yorkshire, England Ellisons/Allisons are genetically related to some Lancashire, Scotland Ellisons/Allisons!

Some of the men in the other group of Allisons/Ellisons with Lanarkshire origins who are participants in the DNA project already had traditional genealogical proof that their earliest Allison/Ellison ancestor migrated from Windyedge Farm in Lanarkshire to the American colony of Virginia in in the early 1600s. Other men in that group learned about their Lanarkshire roots when they received DNA test score results that matched the DNA score of the Allison men who knew that their Allison ancestor was John ELLISON/ELLYSON from Windyedge Farm. Those Allisons and Ellisons have ancestors who lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas and other states.

There are other ALLISON and ELLISON men who have received their DNA test results and are waiting for a "cousin" to join the project and provide a matching DNA score. They are currently "orphans" but hopeful that they will soon find a genetic match.

The type of DNA that is tested is Y-chromosome DNA that is passed down from father to son through the generations just as surnames are passed down from father to son through the generations. Because only males inherit Y-chromosome DNA, only men who HAVE the ALLISON, ELLYSON or ELLISON surnames can participate in the ongoing Allison/Ellison/Ellyson DNA project.

Any male who HAS the ELLISON, ELLYSON or ALLISON surname is very welcome to join the DNA project. If you aren't a male with the ELLYSON surname but you are interested in discovering whether your ELLYSON line shares a common ELLYSON ancestry with other DNA project participants, there is a way to participate. Recruit a male relative with the ELLYSON surname to participate and share the cost of the DNA test with him. He could be a distant cousin or a close relative of yours, but he must have the ELLYSON surname.

You can contact me for further information about how any male ALLISON, ELLYSON or ELLISON can join the ongoing ALLISON/ELLISON/ELLYSON DNA Project.
