ELMS FAMILY HISTORY by Charles W. Hutchison, page 17

When George Rogers Clark recruited men for his invasion of the Illinois Country to attack the British forts of Kaskaskia, Cahokia and Vincennes in 1777-1778, he got most of his men from the frontiers of Virginia, well versed in Indian fighting and wilderness survival. Among these men were John, James and Willian Elms. William Elms was listed as the quartermaster-sergeant of the expedition.

John Elms died on this expedition, whether of privation, hardship, or in battle is unknown. The tradition is that Clark himself looked after the widow and children for some time.
