Though Elsemore is not my line, I have come across them quite often in the course of my research. Below is a FTM printout of what information I have accumulated on the Washington County, Maine, branch of this family, much of which has been gleaned from this forum. I invite comments and corrections.

David James

Bill,
If you're still looking for Stillman Elsemore, here are some possible leads. Please note that the surname is spelled both "Ellsmore" and "Elsemore." Gravestones for the earlier generations have "Ellsmore," later ones "Elsemore."

I suspect that your "Stillman Elsemore" may be "George Stillman Elsemore/ George S. Elsemore." During the 19th century, folks seem to use first and middle names at whim, just to confuse us all.

In Elsemore notes recently forwarded to me:
Calais, ME 1870 census:
George S. Elsemore & wife Clara (ages not noted by correspondent)
children:
George D. age 9
Rodnew age 8
Ameda age 5

Justine,
There are some interesting parallels between what you posted and what i've found, there are also some discrepancies so it makes me wonder if my Stillman and your suggestion that George Stillman Elsemore are the same. What we seem to agree on is that Stillman Elsemore was in the Calais, Me. Census. I've found that he and his wife Clara Woodman (originally from Canada) were living with Clara's parents in 1860 in Calais. I show their children as William Keen, George, Rodney and Clara. Not all that different from your George D., Rodnew(y)?, Ameda and William R. (could this be a K and not an R)?
Reason I ask is that my mother knows that her Grandfather was William Keen Elsemore married to Mary Augusta Finnigan from Haverstraw, Rockland Co., New York and they lived in Wantage, Sussex Co., New Jersey. They eventually relocated to Peekskill, Westchester Co., New York (again don't know why). We still don't know how/why William Keen relocated to Wantage, New Jersey, but my mothers father Herbert John Elsemore was born in Wantage on October 20, 1895. I'm intrigued by the comparisions. Do you know who I could write to in Maine to try and find George Stillman Elsemore's birth certificate and maybe his marriage certificate?
Many Thanks
Bill

You might be interested in this old letter: Letter in Nellie E. Bryant's things about an Elsemore, written in 1921.

James Pineo Elsemore, 807 Club Ave., celebrated his 100th birthday, Saturday the 15th of October. So far as known, he is the only centenarian in Bay City.
Despite his advanced age, Mr. Elsemore possesses all his faculties and he spent a very busy day receiving the congratulators who called to wish him luck and "many more birthdays. Mr. Elsemore attributes his long life to good living and regular habits.
Open house was held at the home all day Saturday, Mrs. Morrison, the oldest daughter, presiding at the punch bowl. At noon a sumptuous birthday dinner was served to the immediate family, 28 relatives sitting down. And according to Mr. Elsemore Many of his immediate relatives, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were with him making four generations in all, and many an event long since forgotten was brought to light and discussed. Six of Mr. Elsemore's children were able to be with him as well as on of his brothers, nine of his grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mrs. James L. Morrison, his eldest daughter, came all the way from Worcester, Mass. to participate in the festivities and his other children who were present were Edward S. Elsemore of Otter Lakes, Mich., James Odver Elsemore of Superior, Wis., Mrs. Alfred ( Isabel) Allen of Proctor, Minn., Jacob Elsemore of Flint, and N>D> Elsemore with whom he resides Mrs. Ellen Summerville of Imlay City, Mich., and Andrew J. Elsemore of Plantation 18, the homestead on which Mr.Elsemore Sr. was born, were the only two children who were not here.
Orville E. Elsemore, his 74 year old brother from Royal Oak, Mich., was present, but his brother, H.P. Elsemore of Eu Claire, Wis., and his two sisters Mrs. L.L.Lindsay of Superior, Wis., and Mrs. Jennie Dudley of Minneapolis, Minn., were unable to come.
At the dinner congratulatory letters were read from his nephew, Capt. Norton of the steamer "Rangley," which plies between Bar Harbor, Me. and Mt. Desert, and from John Pope of East Machias, an old friend. And there were presents galore, slippers, neckties, candy, ets. But the present the old gentleman appreciated more than any came from his old "cronies," men who on nice summer days sit with him in Battery Park and tald of old times. It was a purse of $35, to be used for whatever Mr.Elsemore sees fit. With other presents of cash he received in all $58.
The Kiwanis club remembered the old gentleman with a beautiful bouquet of roses, and other flowers were sent by Mr. Lunden, of Kneeland, Lunden and Bigelow, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. John Le Fleur and Mr. and Mrs. Philip Lemere.
And just by way of reciprocation Mr. Elsemore had 10 dozen photographs of himself finished, which he passed out to his friends. Altogether the old gentleman spent a very enjoyable and long to be remembered day, and is now looking forward to October 8, 1922 when he hopes to celebrate his 101st natal day.

Mr.Elsemore was born Oct. 8, 1821.
At Plantation No. 18, Washington County, Maine.
He was the son of EDWARD ELSEMORE and Ruby Pineo Elsemore.
They moved to Bay City in 1883.

28. ASENATH T.6 ELLSMORE (WILLIAM HARRIS5, WILLIAM H.4 ELSEMORE, EPHRAIM3, MOSES2, WILLIAM1)24 was born 13 Jul 1879 in Grand Lake Stream, Washington, ME, and died 1 Oct 1948 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH. She married HENRY JAMES25 23 Jun 1900 in Princeton, Washington, ME26, son of JOSIAH JAMES and MARY GLIDDEN. He was born 26 Sep 1878 in Princeton, Washington, ME, and died 29 Jul 1953 in Wolfeboro, Carroll, NH.

Notes for ASENATH T. ELLSMORE:
[Jamedm49.ged]

Obituary, Portsmouth Herald, October 2, 1948:
Mrs. Henry James
Mrs. Ascenaith [sic] T. James, wife of Henry James, died last night at
her home at 111 Richards Avenue.
She was a native of Grand Lake Stream, Me., and had resided in
Portsmouth for the last 19 years.
Besides her husband she leaves a son, Hoyt P. James of Portsmouth and
five daughters, Mrs. Catherine Sprague of Eliot and Mrs. Gertrude
Bates, Mrs. [sic] Josephine James and Mrs. Dorothy Tells, all of
Portsmouth, and Mrs. Marguerite Ritenour of Rye.
Also two brothers, Charles Ellsmore of Dover and William of Rumford,
Me.; four sisters, Mrs. Blanche Hamilton of Portsmouth, Mrs. Edna
Estey of York, Mrs. Belle Pye and Mrs. Catherine Pace, both of Dover,
and three grandchildren.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------
The source for Asenath's unusual name is Genesis 41:45..."And Pharaoh
called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah; and He gave him to wife Asenath
the daughter of Potipherah priest of On."
According to the New Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, ref. 170h,
Joseph's Egyptian name is thought to mean "God speaks: He lives."
Asenath is a name having some reference to the Egyptian goddess Neth.
The Book of Asenath, one of the aprocryphal books of the Old
Testament, is a romance woven round the references to Joseph's
marriage to Asenath in Gn 41:45ff. It is Jewish in character, but has
been subjected to Christian revision. Its date is probably 2nd cent.
A.D.
As is evident from the several ways Asenath's name was mispelled in
official documents, and the way her immediate descendants pronounce
it, she pronounced her name "Ah-SEE-nayth," whereas the dictionary
gives the pronunciation as: A-se-nath, where the accent is on the
first syllable, the two "a"s are pronounced as the "a" in "act" and
the "e" in the second syllable sounds like the "a" in "alone." The
nickname for Asenath is "Nettie."
The informant on Asenath Elsemore James' death certificate was Mrs.
Marguerite Ritenour of Rye, NH. This is the same person as Asenath's
daughter, Jennie Margaret James.
Walter H. James died of capillary bronchitis. Vera Belle James died of
meningitis.

More About ASENATH T. ELLSMORE:
Burial: 5 Oct 1948, Eliot, York, ME
Cause of Death: Coronary thrombosis
Medical Information: Duration: 2 months
Resided: 1948, 111 Richards Ave., Portsmouth, NH

Notes for HENRY JAMES:
[Jamedm49.ged]

The informant on Henry James' death certificate was Mrs. Gertrude
Bates. This is his fifth child, Blanche Gertrude James.
Henry's place of usual residence as listed on his death certificate
was Parsonsfield, York Co., Maine, so he must have moved there after
his wife Asenath's death in 1948, when they were living at 111
Richards Avenue in Portsmouth, NH.

Henry worked as a pipe fitter at the Portsmouth Navy Yard after he and
Asenath moved there from Princeton in the early '20s. Shortly before
they moved, their daughter, Kate, had a child out of wedlock by a
fellow named Joe Getto, born in Italy and a machinist at the St. Croix
Paper Co. in Baileyville. The child, a boy, was born March 14, 1921, but
died, unnamed, after two hours, "weakened from the difficult labor."

The names of Henry and Asenath's children are given as recorded on
their birth certificates.

Obituary, Portsmouth Herald, July 30, 1953:

I will get as much information as I have together for you. The first child being a still born answers why I could not find a name. In the Maine marriage records there is a Franklin P Spinney that married a Lillian Grover on 08/10/1922. They are both listed as living in Portland Maine. I will see if I can confirm that this is the same person.
