1) His ancestors came from Wales. Zella Armstrong, in "Notable Southern Families" (1918), states categorically that they came from Cardiganshire, Wales about 1760.
If he did nobody in Wales can find any evidience of such, I have sent many enquiries to Wales and no one has ever found that connection.Nor has a WilliamElston been listed departing Wales during this time frame.
(2) They came from Boston: This theory is put forth in "First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge in Olde East New Jersey" (1931). William's great-grandfather, John Elston, was in a shipwreck in Boston harbor in 1631, and "there is no doubt" that he emigrated to New Jersey and became head of the Elston family in Woodbridge.
I venture forth that the John we maybe talking about arrived in the MA. area via the Winthrop Fleet of 1630.
(3) They came from Holland. James Strode Elston, in "Excerpts of the Elston Family in America" (1984),??? says William's grandparents, John Elston (aka Jan Elsten) and Hendrickje Dircxs, were members of the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam in the late 1600s.
Don't believe that John came from Holland-he married Hendrickje Dircxs who came from Holland. The marriage is documented in records of the Long Island Genealogy Society,
"Excerpts of the Elston Family in America" (1984),???
Does anyone have evidence to support, or refute, any of these contentions ?
Highly Recommend that you read the following:
