Mary ELSTON Cole; married 27 Dec. l8l2 to SAMUEL COLE was the daughter of WILLIAM ELSTON (probably son of John) who was born 9 April l793 in Wantage, New Jersey, and was my gr, gr, gr, gr grandfather.
Have conflicting information which reportedly stems from an inaccurate and/or misintrepreted note within (I think) my gr, gr, gr grandfather Asa's family bible. Read someplace where Cole notebooks would probably be more accurate. Had planned to check it out one day....
Growing up, had never heard about above grandfathers who once lived not far from where I reside. I only knew where my grandmother and grandfather were buried. Probably because my father's mother died when he was a small boy and nobody ever taught him about them. (He was the baby of the family).
Have since been to some other graveyards and saw the many ELSTON tombstones for the first time, several years ago, when my husband and I were just cruising around the countryside and happened upon a little hamlet off an old back road which neither of us had ever traveled.
Just several ancient houses dotting what seemed like an almost untouched wilderness;except for a charming little cemetery that was well-kept, beautifully gated with antique wrought iron and surrounded by a wonderful, centuries old rock-pile wall that wasn't crumbling.
Was a really memorable day, felt kind of spooky, despite not knowing for sure, at the time, that we'd actually stumbled upon one of my great grandfathers and some of his brood. Was very moved by four little stones of infant Elstons...and didn't even want to suspect they were "our Elstons."
More later. Have been at this all night.Jeesh! - talk about obsessive, compulsive.Am no longer surprised that people get so hooked on this passtime.
Not sure when I'll get back to you (or even FIND you again - hate directions) but promise I'll do my best to trace some of this down for you, Kacey.
Ironically, first husband was also related to the COLES and although he is deceased, his COLE cousin is still alive and hopefully, "kicking" in a town located around fifty or sixty miles away. Will contact him when time permits and am pretty certain he'll have what we're after.
Warmest regards,
Sherrill Elston Holley
