Shadrack (Shaderack) (my 6th G-Uncle) was the son of Nicholas (Nickey) Emanuel (my 5th G-grandfather) and apparently moved prior to the family name change from Manuel to Emanuel. This particular Shad Manuel emigrated with his own family from Sampson County, NC to the midwest (KY,IN,IL) in the early 1800s (The last record of him in NC was his appearance before a Sampson Co. official to request his father's war pension soon after his mother, Millie Hale, died leaving him as the family heir.)I am not aware of any stops made in GA on their way west. All evidence suggests that we are not related to governor Emanuel of Georgia.
Shad's descendents are some of the Manuels of southern IL, IN and western KY.Nearly 150 years since moving from NC, the Manuels corroborate the stories that my father was told by his grandfather about our family history, that our family name was originally Manuel - given to the grandfather of Nickey Manuel (also Nicholas Manuel) by the two bachelors (Nicholas and Manuel Canobly) who raised him along the Roanoke River around 1700.
That this story has survived generations of separation between these two lives is testimony to the enduring oral tradition.Incidentally, this same oral tradition (part of which was written down by uncle Enoch around the turn of the last century) passed to my father from his grandfather and great uncle, both grandsons of Isaiah Emanuel, was certainly told to grandpa Isaiah by his grandfather, Nickey, the grandson of the very first Nicholas Manuel.
