George Lawrence Eighmy of Rhinebeck, NY (info from some 30 yrs. ago) tells the "hand me down" information that a meeting was held in or near the Clove of all of John's descendants to standardize the spelling of the Emigh name.As no agreement could be reached, the meeting broke up, supposedly with bitter feelings shared by many. The Clove residents retained/converted to Emigh.Rhinebeck residents kept "Eighmy" and several of those living west of the Hudson used Eighmey."Emeigh" also came into use about this time."Amey" is largely attributed to Jonas and Nicholas Emigh, Loyalists who served as scouts for Burgoyne's Army. They made their way to Ernesttown when Burgoyne surrendered.
