My understanding and resarch indicated the Emslie name was norwegian in nature. Translated the name means "by the sea". My understanding is that the Emslies were originally vikings whom were captured during their raids on Scotland and made scottish surfs. Later they apparently rebelled with the MacDougall clan whom they closely associated themselves with to claim their role as Scottish nobles.
