Hi Charlotte!
I thought Alexander Emslie or Elmslie could be my G3-grandfather, but not through a marriage with Charlotte Pyper.
People often married more than once, so could something have happened to Charlotte, and he later married my G3-grandmother Ann Summers? This marriage was in Peterhead on 1st August 1819. The record is of an Alexander Elmsly, seaman of Nigg. That is all I know, but although there is a big clan of Elmsly/Emslie/Elmslies in Nigg, I'm not sure there are many Alexanders, so he must be a candidate. He also seems to have vanished before the start of statutory death registration in Scotland, (1855), and in 1851 Ann Emslie is a 'spirit dealer', ('innkeeper' in 1861), with no mention of a living husband. So it would fit with a marriage to a rather older man.
There was a saying along the lines of 'the farm and the sea don't mix', but Ann Summers, (or Symmers), was herself the daughter of a farmer; so there is no good reason why she should not marry a man whose father was a farmer but who himself was a seaman.
