Need advice on finding ancestors in Bavaria
My ancestor Englehard (Englehardt?) Endres immigrated to the US in 1870, apparently alone, at the age of 15. I have many records for him, but nothing from before he came to the US. Every mention of his birth simply lists his birth place as "Bavaria." He wrote a life story which included NO information about his childhood, parents, or any siblings.
I'm stumped. I am very unfamiliar with Germany and don't speak German. How do I find out WHERE he was born in Bavaria? Were there official birth certificates in Germany in 1855? Should I instead look for a baptism certificate? Is German family history info posted on the web somewhere? On the theory that he was an orphan, where would I look for lists of orphanage home residents?
I'm sure many of you have done research on Endres ancestors in Germany. What is your advice?
